Special Event Opening
Samulnori and Academy of Korean Music

Samulnori came about as a revival of traditional Korean percussion music, but with a modern twist.

Each member of a samulnori quartet plays a gong or drum, the hourglass-shaped drum (or janggo) and barrel drum (or buk) are both made of wood and hide and represents earth sounds; the large gong, known as the jing and the small gong, called the Kkwenggwari, are made of metal and represent heavenly sounds.

The name which translates literally to ‘the playing of four things’ originally belonged to the four-man dance and drum ensemble that introduced the new genre in 1978.

The Minjokeumakwon (Academy of Korean music) samulnori intension is to preserve and cultivate Korean musical traditions through persistent effort, the group has given about 300 performances at home and offers training to the musician.
