CFM International (CFM) is a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (SAFRAN Group) of France and General Electric Company of the United States. The collaboration was founded on a desire by both companies to gain a share of the short-to-medium range aircraft market, dominated in the early 1970s by low bypass engines.
The agreement that established CFM calls for the two parent companies to share everything equally, from design and development to production and support. Final engine assembly is performed both at GE facilities in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and at Snecma facilities in Villaroche, France.
The CFM56 product line includes six engine models spanning the thrust range from 18,500 to 34,000 pounds (82 to 151 kN) thrust. These engines power a total of 30 commercial and military aircraft applications
Today, CFM is the world’s leading supplier of commercial transport jet engines with firm orders nearly 23,000 engines from 500 customers worldwide at a value of more than $155 billion. The more than 17,650 CFM56 engines in service have accumulated 375 million flight hours powering more than 7,200 commercial and military aircraft worldwide as the most reliable engines in the air.
Snecma and GE have formed one of the most successful aviation joint ventures history, and both companies remain firmly committed to maintaining CFM's position as the industry leader in reliability, durability, and low cost of ownership for many years to come.
